County approves $4,500 for Riverfest security after organizer outlines event and budget shortfall

Beth, who presented the Riverfest plan, said the event on May 23 will include a main stage, two bands, a children’s zone, more than 20 food trucks and heritage activities in the museum courtyard. She told the board public safety expenses totaled about $9,000 — roughly 16% of the event’s $55,000 budget — and that the town of Tappahannock agreed to cover $4,500. "So that would be my ask for you here today," she said, requesting county support for the remaining half.
Beth said a large sponsor that had committed $5,000 has delayed payment and will deliver funds in about 90 days, creating a near-term funding gap. The applicant noted the event’s goal of seeding future years: any surplus would be used to support the next year’s Riverfest budget and organizational startup. Board members agreed the event has tourism value and approved the $4,500 security request, directing staff to identify an appropriate funding source such as transient occupancy tax or reserves.
The board earlier added a Riverfest presentation to the agenda and heard gratitude for county staff support and coordination. With county approval for the security expense, organizers said they could finalize contracts and move forward with safety planning for the May event.
