Senate committee adopts revised Alaska Native Languages task force bill

Chair Kawasaki opened the session and the committee considered a committee substitute for SSB 287, the Alaska Native Languages Academic Task Force.
Joe Hayes, staff to the Senate State Affairs Committee, told members the CS makes two targeted edits: it requires at least one member of the minority in the House and Senate compositions of the task force and deletes a duty referencing preservation of research concerning treatment of former Alaska Native Language Center employees. "It adds at least one of whom is a member of the minority" and removes the cited duties, Hayes said.
Senator Tilton moved to report the committee substitute (work draft 34-LS-1654/H) out of committee with individual recommendations and attached fiscal notes. With no objections, Chair Kawasaki reported the bill out of committee with those recommendations. The committee will sign the paperwork after the meeting.
The committee did not take additional amendments on the floor during this meeting. The reported-out recommendation and attached fiscal note will be available in the committee record.
