Commissioners approve sale of coroner’s Ford Explorer to Newcastle for $20,000

The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 24 to approve Resolution 23 allowing the transfer and sale of a surplus coroner vehicle to the City of Newcastle. Coroner R.J. Johnson told the board the county no longer needs the black Ford Explorer and that Newcastle’s city council has already approved purchasing the vehicle.
Johnson said the resolution includes the vehicle’s make and model, VIN, and sets the purchase price at $20,000. The resolution instructs the county solicitor to draft a bill of sale to complete the transfer as an intergovernmental transaction, which the board said may proceed without competitive bidding if it is in the public interest.
Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution; Vanessa recorded affirmative votes and the motion carried, allowing the coroner’s office to proceed with the sale and transfer paperwork.
Coroner Johnson was thanked for attending and told he could proceed once the administrative steps are complete. The record does not show further conditions or contingencies for the sale.
