School board authorizes survey, legal steps to clarify county fairgrounds title

The Deuel School District 19-4 board voted to authorize legal proceedings and an on-site land survey to resolve conflicting leases and unclear title at the county fairgrounds. Board members said leases dating back to the early 1900s contain inconsistent measurements and in some cases were never registered, leaving the ownership and leasing arrangement muddled.

School officials told the board that the district’s interest primarily covers the football and practice fields on the property, while the county and city manage other portions (including 4‑H grounds and the softball and baseball fields). The board was told that some leases use different boundary descriptions (feet versus compass corners) and that not all agreements appear in courthouse records.

The board approved a motion authorizing the district to join a coordinated process with city and county officials to commission a survey and, if necessary, follow legal steps to “reset the boundaries” and record clear leases. Board members said the cost of surveying will be shared by the three governments and that the district has budgeted money for the work.

No detailed dollar estimate for the school’s share was provided at the meeting; board members characterized the work as timely and necessary to avoid repeating the same title research in the future. The motion passed by voice vote.
