Presenters said installing the passive infrastructure now—when slabs are poured—would be inexpensive relative to retrofitting if radon is detected later, and would reduce the risk of expensive future corrections. “It’s very short money to install this passive system now as opposed to later,” a staff presenter said when recommending approval.
Committee members asked about testing and state limits; staff noted the state sets testing requirements and that passive design addresses the need to add blowers or active exhaust only if later testing shows levels above the threshold. The design contract covers site testing, sizing calculations and construction-phase support; the committee approved the proposal on a voice vote.
What happens next: the district will proceed with design drawings to incorporate passive radon infrastructure into the CD (construction documents) so installation can occur during slab work if needed. Cost estimates for active systems were not provided and would only be required if future testing shows elevated levels.
