School committee backs state bills to revisit out-of-district transportation funding

Members said a commission led by Mario Coreno and material reviewed through RIDE identified several million dollars in potential statewide savings if the structure of busing regions and funding were reevaluated. A committee member noted that existing regional boundaries for career and technical education were created in 1977 and have not been updated to reflect growth and changing program demand.
The resolution asks the state legislature to continue evaluating the House and Senate bills and to consider changes that could reduce the local burden of transportation costs. Committee members said keeping local transportation dollars within the district could help relieve pressure on the operating budget.
The motion to support the resolution was made and seconded during the meeting and carried by unanimous vote. Committee members emphasized they supported further study and legislative action rather than immediate local policy changes.
