Cody Wardlaw gym renovation complete; district approves fencing change order and reports maintenance metrics

San Felipe‑Del Rio CISD officials told trustees on Aug. 18 that the Cody Wardlaw gym renovation has passed final building inspection and that ongoing fencing and athletic‑field work will continue at multiple campuses.

Facilities director Hector Chapa presented photos and a status overview: the final interior and exterior work at Cody Wardlaw is complete and the contractor passed the final inspection. At San Felipe Memorial Middle School the new fencing is installed; surplus ornamental fencing will be repurposed at Garfield Middle School but administration requested additional ornamental fencing and gates to finish the work. The board approved a change order with Claw Contractors LLC not to exceed $50,368.54 to procure roughly 290 feet of additional ornamental fence plus three vehicular gates and two pedestrian gates to complete Garfield’s perimeter and playground access.

Chapa also reviewed the practice‑field work, including excavation and drain installation at Garfield and turf work at Memorial Middle School. He reported recent work‑order statistics for district operations: maintenance created 983 work orders in the prior 90 days and closed 746 (76% completion); technology created 3,290 and closed 3,195 (97% completion); transportation created 138 and closed 131 (95% completion).

Dr. V. thanked Chapa and said project management saved public funds: “...he managed this project as a general contractor and in the process he saved about $2.4 million,” Dr. V. said.

The board approved the change order by motion without recorded dissent and heard that remaining site tasks will continue during the school year.
