San Felipe‑Del Rio CISD honors staff, arts program and names Roberto Bobby Barrera a Lighthouse school

The San Felipe‑Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District board on Aug. 18 recognized trustees and staff for recent training and awards and presented Roberto Bobby Barrera Elementary with a national lighthouse designation.
Superintendent Dr. Rios told the board that trustees Jesus Alindo and Amy Haynes completed 20 hours at the Holsworth Center (Texas School Board Institute) and presented certificates acknowledging the training. At the same time, district leaders announced that SFDRCISD earned the 2025 Texas Art Education Association District of Distinction after meeting a 14‑point rubric covering participation, exhibitions, community engagement and program quality. Vanessa Martinez, the district’s fine‑arts coordinator, presented certificates to current art teachers and introduced incoming 2025–26 fine‑arts staff.
Roberto Bobby Barrera Elementary was also recognized by the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence with lighthouse status, a five‑year designation that district presenters said signifies “exceeding rigorous standards in nine critical areas of school performance.” The presentation listed high scores across categories including student support, curriculum, technology integration and community partnerships; administrators said those results were used as evidence for the award.
“This recognition validates the hard work of our district, our teachers, all of our staff, our students, our Laughlin families, our Del Rio families, and the community,” a presenter said at the podium, and staff and community members joined the board for a photo.
The district noted the lighthouse status may open doors for future grants, partnerships and professional development and thanked Laughlin Air Force Base and other partners for their support. No formal board action was required for the recognitions; the announcements were part of the meeting’s recognitions section.
The board meeting proceeded to reports and regular agenda items after the presentations.
