At the Aransas Pass ISD Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 10, Superintendent Dr. Barnes reported that district enrollment continues to decline and that recent flu activity has lowered average daily attendance to roughly 92.6 percent.
Dr. Barnes said some families are choosing to home-school, which correlates with the district's reported attendance challenges. "Our enrollment is still dropping ... some of those parents are pulling their kids for home school," Dr. Barnes told trustees, and staff are pursuing outreach efforts, including principal home visits and promotion of alternative programs, to try to re-enroll students.
Trustees discussed the enrollment trend during the superintendent's report and asked questions about attendance reporting and state valuation impacts on tax collections. District staff noted the state property values recently issued by the comptroller were lower than the district's appraisal values, which the district said will influence funding calculations and tax-collection reporting.
The board received the enrollment and attendance reports as information; no formal action was taken on enrollment at the Feb. 10 meeting. The district also reported it will post the Texas Academic Performance Report materials and make hard copies available at central office and campuses for public inspection.
