Council hears runway rehabilitation plan; construction moved to summer 2026

Council members received an update on the city's airport runway and taxiway project during the July 16 meeting. A council member asked whether the project included lengthening or widening the runway; city staff said the current scope is rehabilitation rather than expansion.
A staff member explained the planned work includes sealing cracks, an asphalt overlay and restriping; for taxiways the likely treatment is a seal coat to preserve pavement life. "It was purely to rehabilitate the runway ... sealing the cracks overlaying it with asphalt and restriping it," the staff member said, characterizing the work as intended to extend pavement life by 20 to 25 years.
Officials said construction was preliminarily scheduled for summer 2025 but has since been moved to summer 2026 to align with stakeholders such as the flight school and to allow for geotechnical testing, consultant design and scheduling. City staff confirmed the local 10% match for grants will be funded from existing bond funds that are currently available.
The council was also told the Airport Layout Plan update will study the feasibility and cost estimates for widening or lengthening the runway; staff expects that work to produce clearer options and cost figures within about a year and to include public input as that plan is developed.
