Burke County reviews public safety strategic plan covering 911, EMS and sheriff’s office
Summary
County staff and consultants presented a multi-part public safety strategic plan covering 911, EMS, the sheriff’s office and fire marshal functions; commissioners asked about missing volunteer fire department data and no formal action was taken.
County Manager Brian Epley opened the Public Safety Strategic Plan segment at the March 6 retreat. Greg Grayson of N.C. Fire Chief Consulting presented the 911 portion of the plan. Chief Burnett, listed in the transcript as N.C. Fire Chief Consulting, presented the EMS portion, and Sheriff Welch presented the Sheriff’s portion.
Presenters outlined key facts, recommended focus areas and next steps for public safety services and operations. Commissioners and panelists exchanged questions throughout the presentations; several board members asked about outstanding data from volunteer fire departments and staff said they would provide additional information as available.
After a lunch recess, the presentations resumed and Grayson presented the Fire Marshal portion. The board did not take formal action on the strategic plan during the session.
The presentations are intended to inform the county’s budgeting and staffing decisions for public safety programs.
