FCPS official says district faces large budget shortfalls, board to finalize budget May 6

An agency official for Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) said the district is confronting large, persistent funding shortfalls that threaten classroom programs and staff.

The official told listeners that school funding — from local, state and federal sources — supports teacher pay, classroom resources, school meals and transportation. “우리 운영 예산의 85% 이상이 교실에 사용됩니다,” the official said (translated: “More than 85% of our operating budget is used in classrooms”).

The official identified two main budget categories: a construction (capital) budget, funded by voter-approved school bonds, that covers facilities needs; and an operating budget that covers salaries for teachers and support staff. Citing a report named in the transcript, the official said Virginia has underfunded public education for decades and estimated FCPS alone faces an annual state funding gap of $568,700,000 — about $3,100 per student.

On the near term, the official said the county’s preliminary budget shows an FCPS shortfall of roughly $150,000,000 and noted that the county board of supervisors is scheduled to finalize the budget on May 6. The official warned that over the past decade FCPS has cut more than $800,000,000 to balance previous budgets and said the district has “reached a crossroads.” “FCPS는 더 이상 우리 학교를 우수하게 만드는 요소에 영향을 주지 않으면서 예산을 삭감할 수 없습니다,” the official said (translated: “FCPS can no longer make cuts without affecting the elements that make our schools excellent”).

If the board adopts a budget that does not close the gap through new revenue, the official said, the district would need to consider reductions that could affect class size, the retention of skilled educators and access to programs beyond state requirements. The official directed the public to FCPS materials for additional details and choices under consideration.

The county board is expected to take final action on the budget on May 6.
