Lewiston planning board members propose outreach to Auburn on comp-plan and shared infrastructure

A planning board member told the Lewiston Planning Board on Aug. 11 that they had spoken with a representative from Auburn's planning office at a Lewiston farmers market and suggested formal staff-to-staff or board-to-board conversations to exchange lessons from the comprehensive-plan process.
The member said Auburn's outreach emphasized bikeability, walking and public-transportation priorities, and proposed that Lewiston staff or board members present materials such as the Riverfront Island Master Plan to Auburn for mutual review. "I suggested that perhaps we could talk planning board to planning board ... or even staff to staff ... because we're in a regional situation here," the planning board member said.
Board members supported the idea as timely, noting shared committees (bike/ped) and intersecting infrastructure such as crossings and greenway use of rail lines. One member said coordinating on housing approaches and PUD practices could reduce uneven development pressures where zoning differs across city borders.
The board did not take formal action but agreed the suggestion was constructive; members asked staff to consider outreach and to report back with a proposed format for information-sharing or a future joint presentation.
At the end of the meeting, the board moved to adopt the July 28 minutes (seconded by Amy Smith); the motion passed by roll-call vote with the members present voting yes.
