Paramount Unified to form AI committee to draft district policy on student data, transparency and academic honesty

District staff told the board on May 13 that Paramount Unified will form an AI committee to develop policies and guardrails for generative artificial intelligence tools.
Assistant Superintendent Patricia Tu and Director of Technology Sean McBride outlined three guiding principles: protection of student and staff data (including compliance with FERPA and related rules), transparency about how tools use data, and equity and accessibility so AI benefits multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
McBride described six policy focus areas: clear definitions of generative AI; allowed versus disallowed classroom use; maintaining a vetted list of district‑approved AI tools; data‑privacy safeguards; training and professional development; and human oversight with incident‑reporting pathways. He and Tu said the committee should include teachers, classified staff, administrators, students, parents and board members and be established before the end of the school year, with meetings beginning in the 2026–27 school year.
Board members asked to be included in training sessions and expressed interest in participating on the committee. Tu and McBride said invitations to the committee and to training sessions will be sent to board members and staff.
