The Kansas State Board of Education received revised program standards and heard demonstrations from K–12 classrooms at its May 12 meeting.
Kansas State University and other higher-education partners presented consolidated agriculture education teacher standards that reduce repetition, center the three-circle model (classroom, experiential learning/work-based learning, FFA youth organization) and emphasize pathways, applied academic integration and professional responsibility.
McPherson College and other stakeholders presented updated speech and theater standards that integrate mass media, debate/forensics and program management, and add a field-experience expectation so candidates gain exposure to performance, directing and debate environments before graduation. Presenters said the changes respond to teacher-prep program capacity and the needs of rural districts.
Board members also heard student demonstrations and classroom routines (vocabulary routines, sentence-diagramming, History Genius Hour) from Roseland Elementary and Topeka Public Schools; members praised the instruction and noted how clear family communication and progress monitoring can support literacy goals.
Members asked for minor wording changes (one board member asked for 'postsecondary' language rather than 'college and career readiness'); staff said they would return with revised text next month for action.
