Board debates curriculum purchasing amid pending state K–12 literacy rules

Administrators told the board May 11 that several planned instructional purchases are contingent on pending state guidance under a referenced K–12 literacy law (PA 146). Staff said they will delay ordering certain high-cost consumable materials for 12th grade until the state publishes an approved list so the district avoids spending on materials that might later be unusable under state rules.
"We are following what the law is saying, and we're making sure to stay on top of that," a district administrator said, and confirmed the district would hold off on the twelfth-grade core purchase until the state list is finalized. Trustees raised questions about a proposed $167,000 line item for consumable K–5 materials compared with prior-year spending and asked staff to break that figure down next week.
Administrators noted they conducted inventory and that lower ordering last year explains part of the increase for this year, while other increases reflect curriculum rollouts and resubmissions to the state approval list. Staff also described additional literacy-related requirements, including training and dyslexia screening tools that could be required under proposed legislation; trustees discussed cost, timelines and the district's plan to pilot and phase in materials.
No contractual commitments for the disputed consumables were finalized at the Committee-of-the-Whole discussion; staff said they would return with detailed line-item breakdowns and will delay specified orders where appropriate until state approvals are confirmed.
