Parks staff told the Park Board the Town of Zionsville celebrated its 25th year as a Tree City in April and logged several operational milestones.
The parks superintendent reported maintenance created 195 work orders in April and completed 176, the parks and public-works teams partnered annually for Tree City recertification, and volunteers—including the Zionsville Parks Foundation, community groups and a Girl Scout troop—planted about 400 native trees at Carpenter Nature Preserve. “So that is a, prestigious title from the Arbor Day Foundation,” the superintendent said, noting the town’s long-running participation in the program.
Staff also reported equipment for the Mulberry Fields concession stand has been delivered and installed and said the Big 4 rail-trail counter recorded 14,924 user trips in April (5,378 cyclists and 9,546 pedestrians). The board thanked staff for the results and for outreach that included a native-plant sale that raised about $6,500 for programs and restoration projects.
At the Nature Center, staff (Mindy) said April saw 1,171 walk-ins and 33 programs, including school visits, early-childhood events and pilot classes. The center reported positive attendance for amphibian hikes and a newly tested parent-and-me etiquette class; staff noted efforts to expand programming with partners.
What’s next: Staff will continue seasonal hires and volunteer coordination for growing park programming and will provide updates on capital projects such as the Snack Shack and Lincoln Park Refresh.
