Students win approval to repurpose Lake County High tennis court into parking and CTE worksite

Students and CTE staff presented a proposal May 11 to repurpose a deteriorated tennis court at Lake County High School into a parking area to support football events and provide hands-on experience for CTE students. The project team said they plan to remove roughly 3,930 square feet of surface, reuse and store metal waste for later sale, and complete major site work across a projected five-day schedule that includes bracket and fence removal, pole removal and an asphalt pour.
Student presenters described safety planning (PPE, supervision), tool lists, and a schedule that would allow the class to do one hour per day during eight periods to complete the work. The proposal was framed as both a facilities improvement and a vocational training opportunity for students; staff recommended the board allow the students to proceed with required paperwork and approvals. A motion to approve the CTE construction project was made and seconded; the board voted to approve the project during the meeting.
Staff cautioned that property-change policies require a formal approval process and that the district must complete necessary paperwork before physical work starts. Students suggested fundraising ideas such as selling parking spaces at events to help offset costs.
The board thanked the students and staff presenters and authorized the project to move forward with staff oversight and any required administrative approvals.
