County planners ask for public input on consolidated General Plan and eight Local Area Plans

Mireya Turner and Shannon Walker-Smith presented a public-draft consolidated General Plan and eight Local Area Plans at the Big Valley Area Council meeting on March 11, urging residents to review materials and participate in outreach.
Turner said the last full General Plan update was completed in 2008 and that the Local Area Plans had been written at different times, so staff combined them into one draft document supported by several grants. The draft and related materials are posted at lakecounty2050.org, which includes a calendar of events, documents and an online survey.
Residents and committee members raised several questions: Margaux Kambara asked whether the materials will be available in Spanish; Turner said staff are considering translation and outreach options. Trina Pauly asked whether downtown rejuvenation plans appear in the Local Area Plans; Turner encouraged reviewers to consult the draft to see how downtown elements are mapped. A resident asked about tribal consultation; Turner clarified that the County does not have jurisdiction over sovereign tribal lands but said interpretive signs and collaborative materials with tribes are part of the plan where appropriate.
Turner also said the most recent outreach survey had just been released and encouraged community members to respond. No formal action was taken at the BVAC meeting; Turner said public hearings and additional notices will be posted in local media and on the project website.
The consolidated draft is intended to streamline future land-use decisions and increase public participation ahead of the Board of Supervisors’ further consideration.
