Montezuma commissioners back 60/30/10 sales-tax split in principle to fund sheriff, road resurfacing and cleanup
Summary

The Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners resumed discussion of a proposed local sales-tax measure and signaled support for modifying the allocation to a 60/30/10 split.
Under the proposed change, 60% of any new sales-tax revenue would go to the sheriff's office, 30% would be dedicated to road-and-bridge projects specifically for HMA (hot-mix asphalt) hard-surface work (commissioners emphasized this was intended for pavement, not chip seal), and 10% would establish a new fund to address litter and cleanup across the county. The chair said this would allow the county to ‘‘start cleaning up the county as far as trash, rubbish’’ and noted the split would also help get a survey distributed and ballot language finalized.
Commissioners discussed what counts as ‘‘hard-surface’’ work and asked staff to make the language precise so voters would understand that the road allocation targets HMA paving rather than routine maintenance or chip seal. The board directed administration (Magellan) to prepare language reflecting the 60/30/10 consideration and to move forward with a public survey and draft ballot language for a future meeting.
Next steps: Staff will draft clearer statutory/ballot language and the board will consider the survey results and finalized measure in a future session.
