Commissioners weigh vehicle-leasing options, inventory and replacement practices

Madison County commissioners on April 27 discussed options to update the county’s procurement policy for vehicle acquisition and whether leasing options should be revisited.
Commissioner William A. Todd urged a review of the county procurement policy and asked staff to examine leasing alternatives. Commissioner Duke W. Gilman said leasing companies previously viewed the county’s fleet as too small to qualify for lease contracts.
Sheriff Duncan Hedges described the department’s vehicle-replacement practice, saying the office begins considering replacements when vehicles exceed about 100,000 miles and that units typically leave service around 120,000 to 150,000 miles. Hedges said the sheriff’s office prefers the option to trade vehicles in when possible and that replacing patrol vehicles is a multi-month process.
County Attorney Colton Lauer recommended maintaining a complete, up-to-date inventory of county vehicles and improving tracking of maintenance to better identify units for reassignment, declaration as inoperable, or surplus and sale. No formal policy changes or motions were taken at the work session.
