DELAC and DAC report calls for more family supports, bilingual outreach

Representatives from the district’s DELAC (District English Learner Advisory Committee) and DAC (District Advisory Committee) presented a bilingual update to the board on parent engagement, needs assessment findings and recommendations.
Presenters said the district serves roughly 1,200 English learners and that, as a Title I district, about 3,700 students are eligible for Title I supports. Committee leaders reported an overall parent-satisfaction signal (84% of respondents expressed comfort that their voices are heard) and high confidence in school safety (95%). The committees recommended family workshops on topics such as ESL and financial education, expanded short-term extracurriculars, and continued investment in fine-arts programming.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the sample sizes and the thresholds that trigger DELAC formation at district or site levels. Presenters clarified that a DELAC is formed when a district has more than 51 English learners and an ELAC at a site is required at 31 or more English learners; presenters also noted a roughly 28% survey response rate and stressed that parent voice informs the LCAP and federal addenda.
The board thanked the committees for their bilingual outreach and for providing data-driven recommendations to improve family engagement and student supports.
