Alamosa County Public Health reports hiring, $9,000 FDA grant and preparedness planning

Public Health presenter Jody Kern briefed the board April 22 on staffing, grants and preparedness work. Kern said a physical therapist assistant was hired effective March 30 and that the department’s current census is 75. Staff held a QA/QI meeting on April 15 and attended ServSafe training on April 6.
Kern said the department received a 2026 FDA grant for $9,000 and is preparing for inspections and summer events. Regional Emergency Preparedness staff are working on a Volunteer Management Plan and an Integrated Preparedness Plan as required deliverables under the PHEP contract covering six counties. Public Health is coordinating with SLV Health’s emergency manager on command structure and updating Community Animal Response Team plans.
Kern also noted work with Adams State University on a community chronic‑disease survey and with schools on immunization outreach. Kern will attend the CALPHO/CDPHE Director Summit the week of May 11.
