Mayor David Parsons used the May 12 meeting to highlight community events and recognize local achievements.
Paul Wright, the city’s parks director, described plans for National Kids to Parks Day at WJ Freeman this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with food trucks, inflatables, crafts and a canine demonstration, and thanked Pediatrics East 2 for sponsoring the event. "So this will be our, I think, fifth or sixth recognition of the day," Wright said.
Mayor Parsons proclaimed 05/16/2026 as Kids to Parks Day for the city and thanked Wright for his work. The mayor also introduced Matt Crenshaw, director of public works, who noted that National Public Works Week is next week and praised the city’s public-works staff for recent accomplishments.
The board also proclaimed May 27 as National Senior Health and Fitness Day. A parks staff member outlined programming at Dixon Park — 30-minute fitness sessions indoors and outdoors, UT Extension providing healthy snacks, a nurse on site and the Lions Club offering vision and hearing screening — and gave the event time as May 27, "8 to 01:30," inviting adults age 50 and over to attend.
Mayor Parsons presented a certificate to Coach Real and staff of the Barnard High School boys basketball team for winning the 4A state championship in the 2025–26 school year. Coach Real thanked the city for the recognition: "Just thank you guys very much," he said.
