Fernley council approves six‑month severance for city attorney

The Fernley City Council voted 5–0 Aug. 20 to approve a revised offer letter for City Attorney Aaron Mortensen that increases the severance payment upon termination from 30 days to six months.
Mortensen explained the substantive change was the severance term and said the current payout based on his salary would be $68,920.80. "I am asking for that change," Mortensen said, adding that he preferred to remain in his position and that the six‑month term provides job security appropriate to the role.
Council members asked about consistency with other city salaried positions. Mortensen said most city employees do not have severance agreements and that some prior senior positions, including the previous city manager, have had six‑month severance arrangements.
Councilman Hannon made the motion to approve the revised offer letter; the motion was seconded and passed 5–0. The action updates the city attorney’s employment agreement and will be recorded in the personnel files.
