Plan Commission approves wall signage, defers ground sign for 333 West Chestnut

The Hinsdale Plan Commission on May 13 approved illuminated wall signage for a multi-tenant office at 333 West Chestnut while continuing a decision on a proposed monument (ground) sign so the applicant can submit reduced-height and simplified-color options.
Jen Lambert, owner of the building, and Robbie Whitehead of Olympic Sign Company described plans for channel-letter, face-lit lettering and a multi-tenant display that would illuminate tenant logos at night. "I'm Jen Lambert. I'm the owner of the building," Lambert said. The sign fabricator explained the proposal: "So looking to install 2 channel letter sets, face lit, illuminated, low temperature LED on the building, and then also a multi tenant display," the representative said.
Commissioners complimented the thoroughness of the submission but voiced concern about the proposed ground sign's bulk and use of multiple tenant colors. One commissioner asked staff to require 3,500 Kelvin for the lighting. Commissioners suggested integrating the building-name panel into the cabinet to shave inches of height, relocating a north-wall sign to the east side of the entrance for better visibility, and reducing the monument's color palette to three colors.
The commission moved to approve the wall-mounted signs with the north-wall sign relocated to the east of the building entrance and to continue the ground-sign decision to the plan commission's June meeting to allow the applicant to provide alternatives that reduce height (below the 8-foot concern), limit colors to three, and explore other layout options. The wall signs will be required to be turned off on a timer at 10:00 PM, per the materials submitted.
The motion passed on roll call; the ground-sign continuance gives the applicant time to revise the monument design for a future vote.
