Resident urges Hendry County to invest in trash, bus‑stop safety and neighborhood infrastructure

Cynthia Wheeler, a resident who said she moved to the area in July 2011, used her allotted public‑comment time at the May 12 Hendry County meeting to urge the county to invest in neighborhood infrastructure and basic services.
"My taxes have increased about $2,000, and we should get something," Wheeler said, criticizing what she described as substantial county spending on sheriff vehicles while neighborhoods lack trash receptacles and safe bus stops. She described a bus stop near her home with only about 24 inches of room for children to stand and said the area lacks lighting and guardrails where needed.
Wheeler asked for larger trash containers or periodic collection of larger debris bins to reduce burning and illegal dumping, saying that investing in receptacles would reduce yard burning and related hazards. She also criticized perceived use of county vehicles during personal time and urged the board to return some budget resources to residents.
The chair reminded Wheeler her three‑minute time limit had expired. Commissioners and staff did not take formal action during the meeting on the specific items Wheeler raised; they noted related agenda items—such as road projects and code enforcement—were under way and that staff would follow up on some operational requests.
Wheeler said she would attend the continued public hearing in September to offer further comment if necessary.
