Berkeley proclaims John Muir Elementary Day; honors NewBridge Foundation

The Berkeley City Council presented two ceremonial proclamations at a Dec. 3 special meeting.
Council Member Humber read a proclamation honoring John Muir Elementary as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School, noting the school's recovery in academic performance since the pandemic and crediting principal Jeremy Paco Furlan, faculty, staff, parents and Berkeley Unified School District leadership. A representative of the school thanked the council: “It really, really means a lot to us,” and described the school’s programs, saying John Muir was one of 33 schools in California and 1 of 356 nationally to receive the distinction.
The council also read a proclamation recognizing Kosta Makarkas and Sylvia Ritchie for their leadership with NewBridge Foundation. The proclamation cited NewBridge’s treatment programs, partnerships with school districts and Alameda County Behavioral Health, and noted program capacity figures referenced during the reading: 93 residential beds and 88 transitional beds. Kosta Makarkas thanked the council and described decades of service to veterans and the East Bay community.
Both proclamations were presented and photographed; the council moved on to the consent calendar afterward.
