Taos County’s 9-1-1 director, Roberto Sergosa, presented April 2026 dispatch statistics to the county commission on May 5 and answered commissioners’ questions about how the data are collected and categorized.
Sergosa reported approximately 1,991 total calls for service in April; he said the Taos County Sheriff’s Office accounted for the largest share of law-enforcement calls (about 44%) and that law-enforcement-related calls declined from about 1,171 in March to roughly 883 in April. Fire and EMS combined call volumes were lower month-to-month as well, and the countywide dispatch total fell from about 3,042 in March to approximately 2,400 in April.
Sergosa explained the figures come from the computer-assisted dispatch (CAD) system where dispatchers tag each call with a nature code (for example: accident, overdose, burglary). He said jurisdiction is determined by mapping and dispatcher assessment and that dispatchers exercise discretion to send the appropriate first responder when units are limited. Sergosa offered to provide a more detailed, “in the weeds” breakdown by call nature to clarify which specific call categories rose or fell.
Commissioners thanked him and suggested a joint deeper dive with sheriff’s office data to better understand month-to-month variations, visitor impacts and patrol presence as possible explanatory factors.
What’s next: Sergosa said staff can prepare a more detailed report on request that breaks calls down by nature for further analysis.
