The Monrovia Unified School District Board of Education on Thursday approved a three‑year memorandum of understanding with the City of Monrovia for School Resource Officer services, beginning July 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2029.
District and police‑department staff described the arrangement as a partnership to foster communication and student support. "The SRO will work proactively with students and MUSD officials to counsel and advise on important student‑police related issues and will work on campuses daily to assist students in learning to de‑escalate situations," staff said during the presentation.
Superintendent Dr. Hart Rodas said the SRO schedule will shift so officers spend more time on campuses and engage in relationship‑building rather than appearing only in punitive contexts. "We absolutely want the SRO to be part of our school communities and the positive environment and the positive proactive steps to make good choices," she said.
Trustees asked clarifying questions and framed the SRO as an embedded partner in MTSS and restorative practices. A board member noted the district’s longstanding relationship with Monrovia PD and called the arrangement a positive step toward proactive engagement.
The motion to approve the MOU carried 4–0. The MOU language and any schedule details will be implemented by district staff in coordination with the police department.
