Port Moves, a 69-page bicycle and pedestrian plan funded in part by a Wisconsin DOT grant, received the board’s approval on May 12 after a staff presentation and public-input summary. The plan updates the city’s 1996 guidance and includes maps, crash analysis, short-term actions (crosswalks, pavement markings) and longer-term recommendations (off-street trail relocations, beach/north-trail connections and bicycle network expansion).
Staff emphasized the plan is a guide to inform project design and budgeting; the plan recommends high-visibility crosswalks on high-traffic streets, potential ladder crosswalks on Wisconsin Street and Spring Street, and targeted traffic-calming to reduce vehicle speeds. The board discussed tactical urbanism pilots, priority corridors, and coordination with schools and police; staff said the plan will move next to the traffic safety commission and then through the budget process for funding.
A motion by Alderman Miller to approve the plan for a second month was seconded and adopted by voice vote. Staff will incorporate editorial corrections identified by board members and continue public outreach and interagency coordination.
