Upshur County approves court security grant application and $5,000 school safety award

The Upshur County Commission voted May 7 to pursue a FY 2027 Court Security Grant and to accept a separate $5,000 supplemental award for a school safety program. On a motion by Commissioner Douglas K. Bush, seconded by Commissioner Samuel R. Nolte, the Commission authorized the Commission President to sign the court security application requesting $32,852 to fund security enhancements at the Courthouse and Annex.
Separately, the Commission approved accepting a $5,000 supplemental award from the West Virginia Division of Administrative Services to support the Prevention Resource Officer program at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. County Administrator Tabatha R. Perry told the Commission the award must be fully expended by Sept. 30, 2026. The motion to accept the supplemental award was made by Sam Nolte and seconded by Doug Bush.
Both measures were approved by the Commission during routine business. The grants are intended to fund security and school-safety enhancements; the Commission did not vote on specific line-item expenditures at the meeting. Next steps include finalizing and submitting the court security application and ensuring the school-program funds are expended within the state deadline.
