Teachers present new social-studies and health textbook proposals; board to review before adoption

Teachers presented recommended social-studies and secondary health textbooks. Neither curriculum was adopted tonight; the district will keep review copies available and schedule high-school social-studies materials for a future presentation.
Seventh-grade social-studies teacher Brandon Solesman and colleagues presented proposed social-studies instructional materials from Gibbs Smith Education and described why the texts were recommended for adoption.
Solesman told the board the texts "align with the state standards well" and emphasized their student-friendly layout, embedded learning supports, multimodal projects and online read-aloud features intended to increase accessibility. Board members asked how many options were considered (five total) and whether the district had coordinated choices with the high school. Staff replied the high-school presentation is scheduled for next month and the middle- and high-school teams have not fully coordinated adoption timing.
Taylor Long, a district PE teacher, presented a proposed secondary health curriculum (publisher Human Kinetics). Long said the package integrates decision-making, mental-health topics, substance-abuse prevention and real-life skills and is straightforward to upload to Google Classroom. "This curriculum is really easy to upload to Google Classroom," Long said, describing the product as useful for teachers and substitutes.
Neither curriculum was adopted at the meeting. Board members were invited to review copies; staff said materials would remain on hand for about 30 days and the high-school social-studies presentation will occur at a future meeting. The board asked staff to continue public review opportunities and to invite parent feedback before any final adoption vote.
