Council approves rezoning and preliminary plat for Habitat for Humanity five‑lot subdivision

The Virginia City Council on May 12 approved a planning and zoning recommendation to rezone a parcel on Highway 53 and approved a preliminary five‑lot subdivision plat submitted by Habitat for Humanity.
Planning staff (Jenny) told council the rezoning from I‑2 to B‑1 is "in harmony with the purpose and intent of city ordinances and with the comprehensive plan" and would maintain the essential character of surrounding properties. After brief discussion, the council voted to approve the rezoning.
Staff also presented a preliminary plat (parcel 090014001640) near Cottage Lane in the Ridgewood area to subdivide the property into five single‑family lots. Jenny said the plat meets ordinance and zoning requirements and will undergo additional review by city staff, the city engineer and the county surveyor before a final plat is considered. Councilor Paulson asked about costs to the city; staff said the city does not incur platting costs beyond staff time.
The council approved the preliminary plat and directed staff to continue the technical reviews required for final plat approval.
