Construction set to start in June; bid package 1 came in under referendum budget

Tory Scholes of EUA (S6) said the district plans to begin construction on the first bid package the first week of June 2026, covering six schools in two clusters. "As we start construction this summer of 2026, there will be six buildings under construction," Scholes said, and the team identified on‑site project managers and superintendent staff who will be visible on the projects.
Mike Johnson of JP Cullen (S10) and the district said the competitive bids for bid package 1 came in at about $39.5 million, compared with the referendum budget of $42.2 million — a variance that allows the district to consider alternates and next‑level work such as LED lighting upgrades and other priorities. "39,500,000 is what the competitive bids came in after all of that design and bidding process," a presenter said.
Project managers outlined the phased sequence through 2029: phase 1a/1b initial construction this summer, additional bid packages in 2026–27 and construction activity peaking in subsequent summers. Staff stressed continuing coordination across design, budget monitoring and schedule control to avoid redesign and rebids. The team also noted bid package 2 is trending about $800,000 over the schematic budget and identified options to reduce scope (stairs at Roosevelt, plumbing fixture unit selections and alternates for lockers and windows) if competitive bids require prioritization.
The committee also got updates on specific capital work: athletic field repairs at Parker and Craig following flood damage, a scheduled Kennedy roofing project beginning May 18 at a contract cost of $1.25 million, and Craig’s chiller commissioning (pumps and factory startup scheduled with temporary use of water in the loop until ordered glycol arrives). Project staff said they continue to refine schedules to accommodate summer school relocations and noted the district’s borrowing and fund balances that support the work.
Administrators urged the committee to continue budget monitoring and to be prepared to accept alternates or scope adjustments if later bid results shift.
