The Papillion La Vista Community Schools Board of Education recognized state journalism champions from Papillion La Vista High School and Papillion La Vista South and student council representatives before hearing a report from the district’s Leadership Cohort at its May 11 meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Rickley called students and coaches forward to accept board recognition for state journalism achievements and sports titles. Leaders from the cohort — introduced by board staff — presented an 18‑month overview of the program, which included guest speakers, shadowing experiences, mock interviews, and personalized learning classes developed and led by cohort members.
Cohort presenters (including Laura, Sarah Parks, Rachel Stevens and Kate Conrad) described hands‑on components: two‑day shadowing placements across district departments, mock interview panels with administrators, and an option to receive UNO leadership credit. Presenters said the cohort committed “over 50 hours” in person and that the training and networking helped participants prepare for leadership or administrative roles.
Panelists summarized outcomes from a course survey: “100% of the participants felt that the cohort better prepared them for a leadership role,” and the cohort said they would recommend the program to colleagues. Board members asked about eligibility and timing for the next cohort; a presenter said applications will open in 2027 and that candidates generally must demonstrate leadership intent and be working toward or hold an advanced degree.
Board members praised the program’s role in recruitment and retention and its return on investment in internal leadership development. The board’s discussion also highlighted the cohort’s community‑facing experiences, including a legislative visit and volunteering at a district community closet.
The presentation concluded with board appreciation and a reminder that staff will return with any requested clarifications at a future meeting.
