DelVal outlines SAFE SEEK framework for AI in classrooms; administration will survey parents and teachers

District staff briefed the board on a planned curriculum and governance framework for classroom use of artificial intelligence, emphasizing media literacy, academic integrity and teacher oversight.

The presenter described a "SEEK" initiative (Safe, Ethical, and Effective Use of AI Technologies) and said the district plans to pilot a confined "school AI" tool that teachers can manage within mini‑classrooms so students receive guided feedback rather than accessing public models. "For academic use, we are...looking to utilize and incorporate artificial intelligence into our classrooms, but with the oversight of SEEK," the presenter said, emphasizing safeguards and a focus on ethics and academic integrity.

Staff said the district will require teacher training and offer certification opportunities, run continuous assessment and conduct student, parent and community surveys to inform curriculum development. The presenter said teachers can monitor student interactions with the tool and intervene when appropriate.

Board members asked about how the tool is accessed (not an app store download but a web‑based bookmark or classroom tool), how the district will address hallucinations and bias, and what communications the district will provide to families. Staff said a parent survey would be sent and informational materials would be prepared for the district newsletter and website.

Next steps: the district will continue the pilot, distribute surveys to students and parents, update academic‑integrity policies and return to the board with further materials and proposed implementation details.
