Pulaski County launches Camp Ignite summer program with nearly 500 students signed up

Pulaski County School Board members heard details on Camp Ignite at their May 12 meeting, where staff described a project‑based summer program designed for elementary and secondary students.
As of the presentation, staff reported 364 elementary and 110 secondary students had applied (a total of 474; staff estimated the number could rise to about 476–478 as additional confirmations arrived). The two-week program will include pool visits, project-based learning tied to reading, math and science standards, daily breakfast and lunch, and evening virtual check-ins for teachers.
Staff said elementary programming will use 20 classrooms with supporting staff, and secondary will run with seven classrooms. Professional development for participating teachers will come from the Van Andel Institute on June 3, funded through the division’s computer‑science grant; project kits were purchased from a consultant and are planned to become reusable instructional materials for the district.
Logistics discussed included drop-off beginning at 7:30 a.m., pool sessions with Randolph Park staff supporting elementary swim expectations, age-tiered dismissal by 5:30 p.m., published bus routes, and field trips (elementary: planned movie-theater visit and picnic; middle school: Barter Theater visit pending confirmations). Community partners including Dublin United Methodist Church committed to providing food packs for attending students.
Superintendent Graham invited board members to attend the program’s first day at the board of supervisors meeting on June 8. Staff emphasized they are still finalizing class lists and the master schedule and asked for volunteers to support club offerings during the program.
