Mission presents veterans cemetery operational-excellence award and proclaims awareness observances

The Mission City Council used part of its May 12 meeting to honor local service providers and to adopt several community proclamations.

A representative from the Veterans Land Board presented the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery at Mission with the National Cemetery Administration's Operational Excellence Award and a Texas Star of Excellence for meeting stringent operational standards. The presenter highlighted that inspectors evaluate dozens of operational standards during compliance reviews and noted the award was signed by an Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs who had appeared at the Austin ceremony.

Council also approved proclamations recognizing Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Stroke Awareness Month (with a presentation by a South Texas Health System representative promoting a "Steps for Stroke" 50,000-step challenge launching May 16), Mental Health Awareness Month (read by a councilmember), Emergency Medical Services Week (thanked by fire-department leadership), and National Police Week (noted by the police chief).

Members of the motorcycle community attended and thanked the council after a short ride from the fire station to City Hall. A community representative cited Texas motorcycle-crash statistics and urged more enforcement of distracted driving: "Last year, there were 8,932 motorcycle crashes in Texas, and 557 riders died," the speaker said.

Council approved each proclamation by unanimous voice vote and paused for photographs with honorees and representatives.
