Atascadero City Council voted May 12 to authorize the fire chief to proceed with weed‑abatement enforcement on properties identified as potential fire hazards.
Fire staff described the weed‑abatement timeline: in March 2026 inspectors visually inspected 11,341 parcels; in April the city mailed 5,868 notices declaring weeds a nuisance (a reduction of about 500 from 2025). The chief said the city will reinspect the identified parcels beginning June 1; properties still out of compliance may be personally contacted, tagged and then abated by contractors, potentially as soon as June 2 for noncompliant lots.
A public commenter praised the clarity of this year’s notices and suggested the title be broadened to “weed abatement and refuse abatement” so residents understand piles of pallets and flammable materials are also covered. The chief reiterated the public‑safety purpose and explained the door‑tagging, computer tracking and contractor notification process. The council approved a motion authorizing the fire chief to perform abatement work on a unanimous roll call.
Next steps: fire department will reinspect tagged parcels starting June 1, notify property owners with door tags and proceed with contractor abatement where necessary.
