Superintendent warns of budget deficit; district celebrates 172 graduates and three retirees

Superintendent Dr. Boyzer reported to the Tonganoxie USD 464 board on May 13 that the district is confronting a budget deficit the administration is investigating and addressing in both the short and long term.
"Not a surprise here on the budget ... we've got some concerns there with a budget deficit," Dr. Boyzer said. He added that on the insurance front the district is "looking at a possible either 0 to 1.3% increase," and that staff will provide an update at a meeting scheduled for June 2.
Administrators also reviewed graduation and staffing updates. Miss Tonya Phillips said the district had 172 graduates and noted incoming kindergarten numbers were low so far. She described staffing turnover as lower this year—"maybe 10" people versus prior years of roughly 20–25—and said administrators are working to fill openings. The board recognized three retirees during the ceremony: Steve Harrell, Kathy Harrell, and Diana Sitner.
A board member asked about statutory contract-notification dates for staff resignations; Miss Phillips said the dates are determined by state statute and that May 31 is the staff-notification deadline this year. The board did not take further action on budgeting at the meeting; the matter remains under administrative review.
