Fire Chief (Chief Cash) summarized the staff recommendation to adopt the state‑issued 2026 California Fire Code and to amend the Guadalupe Municipal Code accordingly. He said the state version took effect Jan. 1, 2026, and staff recommended the city adopt the latest code. "The primary focus of this request is to adopt the 2026 fire code," Chief Cash said.
Council members noted specific problematic deletions and references, including a deletion affecting "fire department connection" references (section 912.5) and a removed section on portable fire extinguishers. One council member recommended the city bring a corrected ordinance back for another first reading rather than proceeding with adoption with errors in the draft. Chief Cash agreed to consult his training captain and correct references and return with a revised draft.
Council took no action on the ordinance at this meeting; staff will correct the ordinance text and reschedule a first reading at a future council meeting.
