Resident urges commission to set standards for sidewalks, lighting and signs in historic districts

Kevin Fangman (resident) told the commission that conversations about restoring properties should include standards for surrounding amenities such as sidewalks, street lighting and sign types so replacements maintain a period-appropriate, uniform appearance.

Fangman, who gave his address as 710 3rd Street South and said he lives in one of the proposed historic districts, said he was not asking the city to remove features that are currently in good condition but urged the commission and community development to recommend specific products or materials so future work follows a consistent standard. “But what we haven't talked about is what about the, surrounding amenities? Things like sidewalks, street lighting, sign types,” he said.

The chair thanked Fangman and asked whether he had provided his name and address to the record; Fangman confirmed. The chair acknowledged the point and said the commission and community development could discuss historic-district signage and related standards “down the line” as the nomination and implementation timeline proceeds. The chair reiterated that consultant deliverables are expected by July 2027 and that formal listing on the National Register of Historic Places would take longer, roughly a year to a year-and-a-half after consultant deliverables.
