Commission approves Weatherford College rezoning to allow five‑story building

The Weatherford Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to recommend rezoning several Weatherford College properties and to amend the planned development to permit a five‑story building on college-owned parcels.

Monica, city staff, explained the request covers multiple parcels including 205–207 East Park Avenue, 1403 Sloane Street, portions along Martin Drive and a property on Texas Drive. The proposal would rezone those properties to the existing planned development and amend development standards to explicitly allow a five‑story college building on campus property.

John Stark, facilities director at Weatherford College, told the commission the college intends to use the long narrow strip of land for future athletic facilities and confirmed the properties would remain for college purposes rather than being marketed. “Absolutely,” Stark said when asked whether the long strip would be used by the college.

Resident Linda Buck, during public comment, asked whether a traffic study had been done for Texas Street; staff replied that under current Texas law traffic and engineering studies are not required at the zoning stage and would be addressed during permit review.

Commissioners asked questions about the scope of the plan development and the long-term use of the parcels. After discussion, the commission moved to approve the rezoning and PD amendment; the motion passed unanimously. Staff noted that traffic, drainage and other engineering impacts will be reviewed when the college submits construction permits.
