School division unveils 'Democracy 250' civics project tied to 250th anniversary

"Our goal is to spotlight people and places across the Commonwealth and beyond that embody and celebrate our national identity," Mr. Boon said, describing walking tours, place-based lessons and classroom activities that connect Harrisonburg and Rockingham County histories to the broader national story. He said the project will include Veterans Day and Sept. 11 commemorations and partnerships with state and national organizations.
The presentation emphasized using local sites as entry points for civic conversation: teachers visited the Northeast neighborhood (historically "New Town"), which Mr. Boon said was established by formerly enslaved people during Reconstruction, and explored connections to nearby institutions and community groups. He noted an oral-history approach: "Broadway High School teachers are taking a unique approach to emphasize the power of oral history," Mr. Boon said, urging students to record community members' memories as part of the curriculum.
Mr. Boon flagged two online resources the division will promote for classroom use: a learning program from the 9/11 Museum that will be available on demand for the Sept. 11 anniversary, and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation materials that pair individual stories with lesson plans.
Board members asked whether field trips or student travel might be built into the project; Mr. Boon said the division is considering options but did not specify itineraries. The presentation closed with an offer to provide more information to the board and community as planning continues.
The board did not take formal action on Democracy 250 during the meeting; the presentation was listed among informational items and the division will bring further details to future meetings.
