The Rockingham County School Board approved a slate of routine actions at its meeting, including minutes from a prior meeting, a student field trip, high-school course offerings for 2025–2026 and several policy revisions.
The board first approved the minutes of the Nov. 11, 2024 meeting after a motion and second. The superintendent then presented a field-trip request for Elton Middle School's FCCLA state leadership conference, scheduled for April 3–6 in Virginia Beach for 16 students; the board voted to follow the superintendent's recommendation and approved the trip.
Director of Support Services Liza Kulman presented the proposed high-school course list for 2025–2026 and answered a clarifying question about availability: the courses will be shown during registration but which classes become active at each high school depends on enrollment minimums and staffing at each school. "They'll be offered at registration time, but particular high schools, depending on staffing, can determine what becomes live in the fall," Kulman said.
Supervisor Becky Tanell returned to present policy revisions previously provided for information. Board members asked about an added paragraph to policy BDH (public participation at school board meetings); Tanell said the paragraph was added following guidance from the Virginia School Boards Association and the change reflects a recent amendment in the Code of Virginia. The board approved the policies as presented.
The items were handled during the meeting with motions, seconds and chair calls for votes; the transcript records the motions and that they "passed." The board scheduled review and final action on the district's comprehensive plan at a later meeting.
What's next: The comprehensive plan draft will be returned for approval in December; staff and board members were asked to send suggested edits to the superintendent before that meeting.
