Green Bay schools honor state qualifiers, champions in cross-country, soccer and esports

The Green Bay Area Public School District recognized Southwest High School esports (state Division II champion), and Preble High School boys and girls cross-country and boys soccer teams for conference, sectional and state achievements during the Dec. 16 meeting.
Before the board's business began, the Green Bay Area Public School District recognized student-athletes and esports teams for recent successes.
Coach Kyle McMahon said the Preble boys cross-country team was sectional champion and returned a number of state qualifiers, and captain Ben Piantek described the season as "definitely my favorite year of cross country." Hannah Smith, a captain for the Preble girls, said the girls were conference champions, made back-to-back state appearances and saw school records broken during the season (one time reported as "1852 for a 5K").
Coach Chris Becker and senior captain Ben Raul highlighted the boys soccer team's run to the state tournament, including a win over DePere. A district representative described Southwest High School's esports team as a recent state Division II champion in Smash and noted the program offers competitive opportunities for students who may not otherwise participate in traditional sports.
Board members applauded the students and coaches and asked that families and supporters stand to be recognized.
