The Moses Lake School Board on Nov. 21 approved a preliminary agreement with Abshire Construction to complete outstanding work at Vanguard Academy.
Board members voted by voice to approve the proposal after staff explained the agreement is a step to finish remaining items under the existing contract and is not a final settlement. The motion to approve was made and seconded on the record; the board approved the proposal by unanimous voice vote.
Brian (joining by phone) told the board the agreement lays out the next steps following a mediation process and that the district’s attorney had been involved in negotiating those steps. He said the agreement preserves the district’s contractual rights and describes options for taking more aggressive action if required.
Board members asked about Abshire Construction’s past performance. A board member said the district has been "disappointed" with progress and suggested that detailed discussions about contractor performance could move to an executive session to address contractual particulars.
The agreement provides a path to finish remaining items at Vanguard while retaining remedies available under the contract, and staff said the district will continue to pursue open issues if Abshire fails to follow through.
Votes at a glance - Approval of Abshire Construction proposed agreement: approved (unanimous voice vote as recorded).
