Richardson library renovation 85% complete; board sets mid‑August move and late‑September reopening target

Presenter Carrie Samples told the board, “So right now, we’re about 85% complete,” and walked members through a progress report that included an active punch list, interior signage being installed, and furniture and shelving scheduled to be installed next week. She said exterior work — including canopy glass, a painted exterior stair and mechanical work for the canopy — is still underway and that waterproofing has delayed paving on the west side and installation of the exterior book drop.
Samples described interior features that will be visible when the building reopens: an arched story‑time room with a barn door, a glass‑walled multipurpose program room in the basement, wayfinding monitors on each floor, and accessible restroom finishes with tactile floor dots and braille signage. She said some specialty glazing (Frick glass) and other installations will be finished over the coming weeks.
On logistics for moving the collection, staff said they hired Library Interiors of Texas to transport books and handle shelving placement; the city will supply new furniture at the renovated site. Tech Logic is scheduled to install the sorter, security gates, self‑check kiosks and lockers in August. “They’re only moving the books … they tell us how many books to put on every shelf,” staff said, describing the mover’s role in managing shelf capacity and checked‑out items.
Samples said the board and staff will be invited to a site tour before the building is furnished and again closer to opening, with one early tour scheduled “08:30 to 10 on Saturday morning.” She told the board the library intends to close for the move in mid‑August (around the start of the school year) and is targeting a reopening in late September or early October; the board agreed to avoid scheduling conflicts with the Richardson Reads 1 Book events.
The board did not take a formal vote on the renovation or move schedule during the meeting; staff said they will return with firmer dates as installations complete.
