Board members publicly praised school staff and a volunteer after a medical emergency at Brook Primary North and approved several routine business items and training at the Jan. 27 Brooke County Schools Board meeting.
Board members described a serious incident at Brook Primary North in which a student lost consciousness and staff members administered CPR until emergency responders arrived. A volunteer from a nearby volunteer fire department also assisted, and the student was transported to Children’s Hospital; board members said the student’s condition improved during transport. In remarks to the board, a member described staff actions as lifesaving and praised teachers and support staff for their training and composure.
The board approved a continued participation agreement with FirstEnergy for a district energy demand-response program that the district has used since 2010. Board members noted the program can include temporary curtailments during extreme conditions but that no shut-offs occurred during a recent cold period; the district receives rebates from participation and board discussion referenced average credits around $9,500.
The board also approved a professional-development agreement to begin Feb. 17 or 18, with an initial principals’ session covering “Habits of Mind” and an 8 a.m. start time. Board discussion indicated the program will be funded from the district’s professional-development allocation and that directors will meet first to align the work.
Multiple travel, facilities and student-event requests were approved with voice votes, including travel for math students to a Belmont Technical competition and permission for middle-school swim and softball activities with supervision and appropriate facility protections. The board recorded personnel postings and actions including certified postings p1688 and p1691; named personnel referenced in the agenda included Megan Alexi, David T. Wilkinson, Yolanda Elliot, Jesse Batista and Madison McCartney. The board moved into executive session to discuss personnel; the transcript indicates the board entered executive session and later reconvened with no public action reported regarding personnel matters.
Board members also noted ongoing facility upgrades—new cabinets, AEDs, and signage—and announced the next regular meeting for Monday, Feb. 24 at the same location.
